Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites for Washington State is an excellent, well-organized collection of valuable links for Washington researchers. Be sure to check out the other sites on her page, as well!

Another comprehensive listing of Washington resources is ROOTS-L's United States Resources: Washington.

A list of vital records available at the state's office of vital records, and for each county can be found at Washington Vital Records.

The Washington State Department of Health has instructions for ordering birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates.

Other newspapers with online obituaries are listed at Genealogy Gateway.

The Political Graveyard has an interesting listing of political figures buried in the state of Washington.

Several sites list volunteers willing to help you in your hunt for that elusive Washington ancestor: try "Books We Own-Washington" or "The Genealogy Helplist-Washington" for a list of volunteers.

To subscribe to the WASHINGTON-L-ROOTS mailing list, send a message to washington-l-request@rootsweb.com; in the body of the message say SUBSCRIBE; turn off all signatures before sending message!

To subscribe to the WESTERN-ROOTS-L mailing list (formerly NORTHWEST-ROOTS), send a message to listserv@listserv.indiana.edu; in the body of the message say SUB WESTERN-ROOTS-L firstname lastname. Turn off all signatures before sending message!

    General Links:

If you haven't checked out the U.S. GenWeb Archives, you are missing out on an incredible volunteer effort to make public-domain documents available free of charge on-line. The newest project's goal is to place the entire 1850 U.S. Census on-line. Check out the states, and perhaps make a contribution of your own!

Gene Stark's Index for surnames on the web is a great place to conenct with others searching your name.

Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative is a valuable source for genealogists, including the complete ROOTS-L archives, the Roots Surname Location lists, hundreds of surname- and geographic-interest mailing lists, as well as a growing collection of searchable databases.

All known census records published on the web can be found at the On-Line Census Page. If it isn't on this list, then it probably isn't online!

Many of the online searchable genealogy databases can be accessed directly from this page.

Lori Hoffman's Page has an interesting collection of sites, as well as links to her lists of volunteers willing to do CD look-ups and look-ups of privately-published materials.

The RAND Genealogy page is one of my favorite collection of links, and includes the RSL Surname List, Location Index, and Soundex converter.

A very interesting new site, with lots of potential, is Indexes Unlimited, which features the Table of Contents and Indexes from a number of books and genealogical journals. There are also links to online databases.

The WPA Life Histories sites has full texts of biographies and interviews conducted as part of the Federal Writer's Project, 1936-1940. Even if you don't find your own relative, the biographies offer fascinating insights into life in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

The National Archives has a site with on-line catalogs of genealogical resources, including census and immigration records, available from the Archives.

The US Gazetteer will display maps on-the-fly as well as population statistics taken from the 1990 census.

The USGS Mapping Service allows you to search for specific features (such as all populated places within Lewis County, WA), provides a list of results, and displays a map of specific selections. If for some reason this site is down, you can visit its mirror site at the Yale Peabody Museum.

The Social Security Death Index, as well as other databases, can be found at Ancestry, Inc (this site is often very busy or cranky--you will have better results if you search in off-peak hours). Everton also has the SSDI on-line (according to their website, this will be a free resource only until Dec. 31, 1997). Information on ordering Social Security applications can be found at the government's SSA site.

The Journal of Online Genealogy is a monthly publication devoted to genealogy. Check it out!

A biweekly journal, and other databases, are available at Everton.

For a truly lighthearted look at genealogy, check out The Outhouse, a very humorous collection of anecdotes and genealogy jokes.
