Death Takes Elmer Basse

"Elmer (Hippo) Basse, 63, lifelong Centerville rancher, died Saturday at Klickitat Valley hospital following surgery for an acute abdominal condition, complicated by peritonitis. He had entered the hospital late Wednesday.

Well-known in central Klickitat county, Mr. Basse was prominent as a Granger, member of Centerville Grange and for activity in the Centerville Fire Department and other local endeavors. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran church, and of Neighbors of Woodcraft lodge. He was born at Quincy, Ore., but had lived at Centerville since the age of two years.

Funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Knosher Funeral Home, with interment at Centerville cemetery.

Elmer Erick Basse

"Elmer Erick Basse was born March 18, 1902, at Quincy, Ore., the son of Wilhelm and Wilhelmina Basi. When he was two years old, his parents moved to Centerville, where he attended grade and high schools. His boyhood and entire adult life were lived in the Centerville community, as a farmer.

Mr. Basse was a long-time member of Centerville Grange No. 81, and a charter member of the Centerville Fire department. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran church, and of Neighbors of Woodcraft lodge.

He was married June 10, 1927, to Edna Mae Stewart, who died in 1954 on June 10, their wedding anniversary. One son, Stewart, born of this marriage survives. Two other children died at birth.

Mr. Basse also is survived by his widow, the former Louise Binns, to whom he was married August 6, 1961.

Other survivors include five grandchildren, two brothers, Arthur and Ernest, both of Centerville. A sister, Mrs. Anna Christopher, died in 1947. Nephews and nieces include Donald Christopher, Dallas, Ore., and his sister, Mrs. Betty Sweringen, Helix, Ore.; William Basse and Mrs. Ina Marie Moore, both of Wishram Heights, and Julie Basse, Centerville.

Funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m., at Knosher Funeral Home, with interment at the Centerville cemetery. Pastor William I. Brooks officiated.

Pallbearers were Robert Schilling, Chester Binns, Hugh Cameron, Henry Miller, Duane Linden and William Garner."
