Symes, Alfred James	1870 03-28-1939	Alfred James Symes was born in England in 1870 to Prudence [Burddige] and James Symes. Mary Emma Symes on May 23, 1932 in Yakima County. Mary died in 1944. James passed away on March 28, 1939 at the age of 68 in Goldendale. Alfred Symes was convicted of 2nd Degree Murder in Adams County for the 1893 killing of Constable Louis Conlee, while he was being arrested for hog stealing, and was sentenced to 18 years in prison. He claimed that it was in self defense. Alfred was granted a retrial and was found guilty of manslaughter, and was again sentenced to 18 years. He was considered to be a model prisoner. He was pardoned in 1901 by the Governor.
