We give credit to the Heritage Church, Odessa Historisches Museum and the Odessa Record for assistance in gathering the data.   These have NOT been confirmed by the Odessa City Clerk, but are documentation found within the county that purport to have been buried in Odessa. In many instances (?) will denote that there is some likelihood of error.

Explanations and Common abbreviations used herein:

TS = Tombstone; OC = specific location to Odessa Cemetery; LL = Christ Lutheran Ledger, data furnished by the Museum

dc = death card; DC = death certificate; Obit = obituary

Suchland = A thorough research of the cemetery was done by Harold Suchland and in some cases his mention is the only available record, with no explanation. From that mention, additional research continues and some records are being documented. Due to the fragile condition of the local copies of the Odessa Record papers which went through a fire in the 1980's, some items are not available.

Wo, Sam,  (d. 1953; b. 1857; TS; OC; not obit) “Wong Yuen (Sam Wo), Odessa’s pioneer Chinese laundryman, was taken to the Ritzville hospital for treatment Saturday afternoon by the Strate firm, Al Wagner driving, after he had suffered partial loss of leg movement. It was believed his condition would be rapidly improved. Sam Wo, who came to Odessa in 1902, has operated a laundry since that time. During earlier years he had fellow countrymen as assistants, and in later years, operated the business himself, until old age finally caused him to stop. Just how old he is is not definitely known, but he was not a young man when he came here 45 years ago. He estimates his age at 89 years, tracing back to the dynasty of the Chinese king in power when he was born.” (Odessa Record: 1-09-1947) “Sam Wo is still living, at a nursing home at Sprague where he was removed when an undetermined age forced him to give up his solitary life in one of the west buildings that had been part of the original town.  No one can tell how old Sam Wo is. He alleges he was born in 1866 in China, came to America in 1884. When he first came to Odessa to establish his pioneer laundry he was still wearing his queue, a practice he abandoned in later years....” (excerpt of Odessa Record: 8:23:1951, photo, relatives in CA)-

The mill was obliged to shut down, with eight of the force sick and for a while manager Schimke and miller O’Leary were the only men on the job. The flu claimed its first victim in Odessa this morning when Christ Woitt passed away of pneumonia following an attack of the epidemic after an illness of less than three days. Mr. Woitt was employed at the mill and was taken sick with the rest of the force, but his condition was not considered serious until Wednesday after he went uptown in the rain. He was cautioned by the doctor to stay home, but his wife took sick and he again went out for the doctor for her. After that, pneumonia set in and last night his condition worsened, and he died at 2 a.m.  He was about 30 years old and leaves a wife and two children.” (Odessa Record: Oct 21, 1993 in 75 Yrs Ago, representing 10-18-1918)

Wolverton, D. C.,   (d. 1912; b. 1838; TS; OC)  “D. C. Wolverton, aged 73 years, who came to the Odessa country in 1906 from Cincinnati, Ohio, and settled on a homestead about eight miles north of town, died Wednesday evening from cerebral hemorrhage, or blood clot on the brain.  He has been in failing health for two years and suffered from indigestion and had dizzy spells frequently. He came to town Wednesday to consult a physician regarding his condition, and was returning home with Henry Strate, a young rancher living about four miles north of town, with whom he had been staying lately, about six o’clock in the evening, and when about two miles out he complained of feeling dizzy and leaned against his companion for support. A few minutes later he gave a gasp and collapsed in the seat.  Mr. Strate, fearing he was dead, turned his team around and drove to Jos Horak’s place near by to get a lantern to look at his aged friend, and finding no signs of life, brought him back to town and called Dr Ganson, who pronounced the man dead. The deceased was then taken to Stone’s undertaking rooms and his brother, T. B. Wolverton, who lives on a ranch north of town, notified of his death.  Deceased was a native of Ohio, being born at Hamilton, in that state, in 1838. His wife died several years ago, but he is survived by one son, Clifford, who lives in Cincinnati, a daughter, Mrs. Luella Biles, also a resident of Cincinnati, two sisters, Mrs. Liza Ann Girard, of Stockton, Ohio, and Miss Hattie Wolverton of Cincinnati, and one brother, T. B. Wolverton of this place, who came with him to Washington in 1906, and settled on an adjoining homestead north of Odessa. Just recently he had made arrangements to sell his ranch to his brother and planned to leave in about two weeks for his native state to spend the remainder of his days with his children. His sad and sudden demise will be mourned by many Odessa friends, with whom the Record joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved relatives. The funeral was held from the Methodist church at 11 this morning, Rev Williams officiating, and interment took place at the German Lutheran Cemetery west of town.” (Odessa Record-Feb 9, 1912)
