Obituaries and Church Records for Sprague Catholic Cemetery

All names will appear in bold print in this section; inclusion in this file does not ensure burial. Mention is made of some removals, no effort was expended to confirm or deny these allegations. In some instances the burial is cited to have been elsewhere, and the tombstone has appeared in the Sprague Catholic Cemetery. These could be errors in the original records or could mean that at some point the remains were brought here. Without the original mapping of the cemetery, many questions will remain unanswered.

Garrey, Michael,  d. Nov 19, 1916,  “Warden, Wash., Nov. 20.—Michael Garrey, age 86, was burned to death early yesterday at Tiflis, Wash., eight miles north of here. He was sleeping in a building a short distance from his son, William Garrey, who is section foreman for the Milwaukee at Tiflis. A dance was held at the Tiflis hall last night and some one noticed the fire about 3 a.m. and gave the alarm. Before any one reached the bunkhouse where Mr. Garry was sleeping, the building was enveloped in flames. The body was burned to a crisp before the fire was extinguished. Michael Garrey was born in Ireland in 1830 and came to the United States when he was but 17 years of age. In his younger days he was a farmer and stonemason. The body was removed to Sprague for burial.  It is believed that the aged man arose to smoke, as he was known to do at times, and the fire started from his pipe. Those that reached the fire first could see the outline of the bed where Mr. Garrey was sleeping and they thought he was still in the bed from the roll of blankets that was across the foot of the bed. The body was found on the opposite side of the room laying by a partition. It is thought Mr. Garrey awakened by the fire and made an effort to get out of the burning building, but failed to find the door before he suffocated.—Review. The body arrived here on Monday and the services were conducted Tuesday morning from the Catholic church and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery. Mr. Garrey was Mrs. Dan Brophy’s father.” (a Sprague paper of 11-24-1916) “Michael Garry; white; born Ireland; order by son; Funeral Nov 21, 1916 at Sprague by Father Ferland; Cause of death: suffocation from burning house; Death: Nov 19, 1916; retired farmer; Catholic; Aged: 86 yrs; Names of near relatives: son, Wm Garry; daughter Mrs. Dan Brophy.” (Burial not shown; Sprague Funeral Home ledger)

Garvey, Alice, Feb 11, 1877-Dec 30, 1906;   d/o Edward & Bridget Garvey; TS-SW-19 (shared 6 ft); Death of Alice Garvey, died Monday, funeral Catholic; Father Van de Ven officiated. Alice Garvey was born in 1877 and was from South Dakota. (Sprague Independent notes  1-04-07) “The people of Sprague were shocked when the news was spread about the city Monday morning that Miss Alice Garvey was dead.  Many of her friends did not even know she was sick. Her sickness was of short duration but did not become alarming until Sunday when she was taken to the hospital and operated on for an obstruction of the bowels. The operation disclosed the seriousness of the case when it was found the intestines had grown together in one place, thus completely obstructing the passage. An operation was the only hope of saving her life, but she was unable to withstand the shock and died shortly after. The funeral services were held on Wednesday from the Catholic church and were attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends. The beautiful and impressive Catholic service for the dead was conducted by Father Van de Ven. The father also delivered a very touching sermon. The beautiful casket was buried beneath a bank of floral offerings, tokens of love from numerous friends.  Deceased has long been a resident of Sprague for about 6 years, coming here from South Dakota where she was born in 1877. She was a general favorite among the young people and was held in the highest esteem by all  who knew her.—Independent Times. (Harr. Citizen of Jan 11, 1907)
