Obituaries and Church Records for Sprague Catholic Cemetery

All names will appear in bold print in this section; inclusion in this file does not ensure burial. Mention is made of some removals, no effort was expended to confirm or deny these allegations. In some instances the burial is cited to have been elsewhere, and the tombstone has appeared in the Sprague Catholic Cemetery. These could be errors in the original records or could mean that at some point the remains were brought here. Without the original mapping of the cemetery, many questions will remain unanswered.

Porak, Julia Elizabeth,  d. May 26, 1903; age 18 yrs 1 mo; (CTR: same details as stone) TS-SW-40 (3 ft) beloved d/o Rudolph O. & Anna

Porak; “A terrible accident occurred in Spokane Tuesday evening at 11 o’clock when the Northern Pacific west-bound passenger train pulled in, which resulted in the instantaneous death of Miss Julia Porak, of Sprague, the 19 year old daughter of R. O. Porak, who formerly owned the club saloon here. On account of the vast crowd waiting to depart the gatekeeper allowed the crowd to pass out to the platform and in the rush for seats as the train came streaming in, the lady, a member of a presidential party of four, was pushed too close to the trains and the side rods of the engine caught her and she was pulled under the wheels. Her body was dragged nearly two blocks and when liberated it was found that her head had been almost entirely severed. She was a very estimable young lady and both the parents are away, the father on a pleasure trip to Germany and the mother being treated in St Louis for nervous trouble and to whom it is feared the shock will be fatal.” (Adams Co News of May 27, 1903) “A heart-rending accident occurred at the Northern Pacific depot in Spokane Tuesday night which took the life of one of Sprague’s dearest and sweetest girls and cast a gloom over the entire community. The victim of this sad accident was Miss Julia Porak, aged 18 years, 1 month, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. R. O. Porak. From the best information obtainable the accident occurred in the following manner: Miss Porak was one of a large party of Sprague people who intended returning from the Roosevelt celebration on train No 3 Tuesday night. The depot platform was literally packed with people awaiting the train and Miss Porak with others was in the front ranks. As the train pulled slowly into the depot the vast crowd surged forward and Miss Porak was forced out so far that she was struck by the cylinder head of the engine and thrown under its wheels. Her neck and right hand fell squarely across the rail, the wheels decapitated her and crushed the hand off at the knuckles. Her friends around her were unable to do the least thing to save her and all were benumbed with the shock. Miss Julia had grown up from babyhood in this city and possessed many rare, sweet traits. She was very bright in her studies, graduating from the academy here last year. Her musical ability was the pride of her relatives and friends and she was to have graduated in music in two weeks. Julia was a popular favorite among her schoolmates and was generous and noble to a great degree. She was a dear one in the large family of which she was a member. In fact, her untimely end is deeply mourned by hundreds in this city. Particularly sad is the poignant grief of Mathew Gerten, her escort at the time of the accident; the absence of her father in Germany, and the sickness of Mrs. Dunning, a sister, in Coulee City. The funeral services were held at 10 o’clock this morning in the Catholic church and were attended by fully five hundred sorrowing friends. The funeral procession to the Catholic Cemetery was the largest ever seen here. Floral tributes from friends and relatives completely covered the casket and were beautiful tokens of the love felt for the departed one. Six young ladies from the academy, dressed in pure white, acted as pall bearers. To the heart broken parents and relatives is extended the most sincere sympathy.” (Sprague Times of 5-29-1903)
