EAMES, James Eric, a lifetime resident of Whatcom County, died on February 3, 1997 after a year and a half long battle with colon cancer. He was born in Centralia, Washington, but his parents, Don and Bessie Eames, immediately decided that was no place to raise kids, and moved up to Blaine to have additional kids: Dennis, Willa and Peggy. His baby book mentioned that his first pet was a cocker spaniel, but Jim always told the most stories about his extremely intelligent pet pig, Tiny. Jim graduated from Blaine High School in 1957. He then attended Western Washington State College, got married, had two kids, Eric and Michelle, and commercial fished out of Blaine, all at the same time. Jim started teaching at Nooksack High School for a semester in the early 60's, and the next year he saw the error of his ways, and transferred to Blaine High School to teach England, where he stayed until retiring in 1993. Jim loved duck hunting, flyfishing, Shakespeare, and boats. He built a 17' sailboat and subsequently owned two other sailboats. He always wanted a Harley Davidson motorcycle, but settled for a Yamaha Virago. Jim's other love was golf - in recent years he made a pilgrimage to Scotland to play the "old course" at St. Andrews. We remember on the trip to North Idaho, on the Yamaha, with his partner Elsie, tent, sleeping bags and two sets of golf clubs on the back. Jim traveled as much as he could as he got older - notable trips include the Victoria to Maui sailboat race, visiting his Peace Corps daughter and son-in-law in The Gambia, West Africa, where he learned the hard way how to bribe his way out of the Dakar, Senegal airport, several trips to Hawaii, and visits to cities all over the U.S. (carrying his golf clubs, of course). Jim is survived by his partner, Elsie Heinrick, parents, Don and Bessie Eames of Blaine, son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Karla Eames of Bellingham, daughter and son-in-law, Michelle Eames and Doug Frederick of Spokane, sister Willa Fleharty, of Blaine, sister Peggy King of Alger, brother Dennis Eames of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and ex-wife Margaret Eames of Blaine. Jim, and his sense of humor will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7, at the Squalicum Yacht Club, at 3:30 p.m.
