Erhart was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WWII. At the time of his discharge he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. At home, Erhart was an inveterate fixer and tinkerer. When he wasn't busy with home improvements, his favorite preoccupations were reading and writing. Church also filled an important role in Erhart's life. A lifelong Lutheran, he had been a member of Faith Lutheran Church since his original move to Bellingham in 1957. For a time she was active in the Books for the Homebound program for the Bellingham Public Library. She also served as a volunteer for the American Heart Association block campaigns. At home she often could be found among her two of her favorites, roses and geraniums - a relentless foe of aphids and other invading pests. A Lutheran all her life, Helena was a member of Faith Lutheran Church since 1957. She continued active women's groups throughout the years.
